First: the cat is a carnivore
This is the key to everything. A cat needs a diet that is rich in animal protein. So the first thing to do is read the label: good kibble lists a clearly identified source of animal protein at the top of the ingredients, rather than an excess of grains or vague ingredients.
Adapt to your cat's age and condition
There is no single "best" kibble, only the one that suits your cat:
- Kitten: high protein and energy needs, easy-to-digest kibble to support growth.
- Adult cat: a balanced maintenance formula.
- Neutered cat: this is an important point. After neutering, energy needs drop and the risk of being overweight rises. Choose a lighter formula, often with urinary support, to prevent problems that are common in these cats.
- Sensitive digestion: specific kibble helps support intestinal balance.
When in doubt — an overweight cat, a senior cat, a health concern, a special need — ask your vet for advice: an appropriate diet is part of care, and some medical situations call for a precise diet.
Dry, wet, or both?

Getting the food transition right
You should never change a cat's food overnight: it causes digestive upset. Make a gradual transition over about ten days, slowly increasing the share of the new kibble mixed into the old one. A cat is as stubborn as it is delicate of stomach: patience pays off.
