A weekend in Marrakech, a move to Tangier, a family holiday: at one point or another, the question comes up of hitting the road (or the skies) with your pet. Good news: it's entirely possible. As long as you plan the paperwork ahead and know the rules for each mode of transport. Here's the essentials, updated for 2026.
Before you leave: the documents to prepare
Whatever the trip, get your pet's file ready:
- Its up-to-date health record / vaccination record
- Its veterinary passport, where applicable
- Its identification documents (microchip)
And above all, see your vet before a long trip: they'll check that vaccines and parasite treatment are up to date and can advise you on managing travel stress. For international travel, the requirements (vaccines, timeframes, certificates) are stricter: look into them well in advance.
By car
This is the most flexible mode, but safety comes first: use a carrier crate, a dividing grille or a safety harness. Plan regular breaks, water, and never leave your pet alone in a car in the sun — the temperature climbs in a few minutes and can be fatal.
By train (ONCF)
The train is a convenient option. In practice, a small animal can travel in a transport bag or crate. For a larger animal, it's wise to check the conditions directly with ONCF before booking, as the rules can vary. In any case, a suitable crate or bag reassures the animal as much as it respects the other passengers.
By plane (Royal Air Maroc)
Royal Air Maroc accepts animals, in the cabin or in the hold, with advance notice (48 h or more before the flight). The broad strokes of the published rules:
In the cabin:
- Maximum weight 8 kg, container included
- Rigid, ventilated container, total dimensions not exceeding 115 cm (approx. 55 × 40 × 20 cm)
- Indicative fares announced: 290 MAD on domestic flights, 640 MAD / 70 € to Europe and the Maghreb (and more on long-haul flights)
In the hold:
- Sturdy, lockable container with a leak-proof, ventilated bottom; no straw or hay inside
- Fares indexed to weight (on the order of several hundred to a few thousand dirhams depending on destination and weight)
Note: flat-faced breeds (bulldogs, pugs, Persian cats…) are banned from the hold for health reasons, and some destinations have specific restrictions.
Fares and conditions change: always check the up-to-date rules with the carrier before buying your ticket.
A smoother trip for everyone
Stress is the real enemy of travel. Keep your pet's usual food during the trip to avoid digestive upsets, bring collapsible bowls, a leash, waste bags and a familiar object (blanket, toy). And if your pet is particularly anxious, talk to your vet before you leave.
