Your cat wakes you at 3am? Here's what it wants

If your cat wakes you at 3 or 4 in the morning, it is neither a whim nor revenge. It is usually its hunter's body clock, reinforced by a habit we taught it without meaning to. Good news: it can be gently corrected.

Why is my cat so active at night?

Cats are crepuscular: their ancestors hunted at dawn and dusk, when prey comes out. Even fed and sheltered, they keep this internal clock. They sleep a lot, 12 to 16 hours a day, but in 20–30 minute stretches, so they are often wide awake while you are deeply asleep.

Why always at the same time?

Because you taught it to. If one morning you got up to feed it so it would stop, it learnt the lesson: meowing at that hour brings a full bowl. Cats are very sensitive to routines and quickly link a moment to a reward.

What it is trying to tell you

"I'm hungry": the most common request, especially if the last meal is early in the evening. "I'm bored": an indoor cat that hasn't used up its energy during the day releases it at night. "I missed you": many cats are very attached and seek contact when they wake.

How to get calm nights back

1. Play for 10–15 minutes before bed (feather wand, ball) until it is out of breath: it "hunts", then rests. 2. Give the last meal right after play: hunt, eat, groom, sleep is its natural cycle. 3. Ignore the wake-ups: no words, no eye contact, no food. The first nights are often worse before they get better. 4. Leave it things to do: a treat-dispensing toy, a lookout by the window. 5. Change schedules gradually: cats cope badly with sudden changes. 6. Reward calm: a cuddle in the morning, but only when you are the one getting up.

When should I worry?

A cat that suddenly starts meowing at night when it never did before should be seen by a vet. Pain, stress, an age-related disorder (disorientation in older cats) or a hormonal problem may be the cause, especially after age 10.

Frequently asked questions

Should I shut it out of the bedroom?

It can help, as long as it has access to its litter tray, water and toys. But if it scratches at the door and you open it, it learns that scratching works.

Is an automatic feeder a good idea?

Yes: set early in the morning, it separates food from your presence, and the cat stops waking you to eat.
