Why Morocco is a paradise for cats

Why Morocco is a paradise for cats

In Morocco, the cat is not just a pet: it is a neighbour. You meet it in medina alleys, outside the grocer's, at the foot of mosques, and it travels the world on Instagram. This special place comes from a tradition, an architecture and a very old affection.

Why are there so many cats in Morocco?

First, because they are tolerated and respected. In Islamic tradition the cat is considered a clean animal: a hadith reported by Abu Dawud says it "is not impure" and is among "those who go about among you". It may therefore enter homes and places of prayer. One of the Prophet's companions, Abu Hurayra, owes his nickname to his love of cats: his name means "father of the little cat".

Why do medinas suit them so well?

Narrow alleys, rooftops, markets where people willingly share fish scraps, few cars in the old towns: medinas offer shelter, food and peace. Cats are also valued allies against rodents, which explains their long presence near souks and granaries.

Chefchaouen, a global star… with its cats

Chefchaouen's blue alleys and the cats asleep on its steps have become one of Morocco's most shared images. In May 2026, the PlayersTime ranking reported by Le Matin placed Chefchaouen 46th among the world's most "Instagrammable" cities.

Behind the beautiful photos, many street cats live short lives: disease, accidents, repeated litters. Law 19.25, adopted in 2026, makes the "capture, sterilise, vaccinate, release" principle the rule, and the State says it has mobilised about 240 million dirhams over five years for rabies control and veterinary centres. Sterilisation remains the most useful way to improve the lives of neighbourhood cats for good.

How can you help the cats in your neighbourhood?

Adopt rather than buy: shelters and associations always have cats to rehome. Get your cat sterilised and support local campaigns. Feed with respect for neighbours, at set times, without leaving waste, and within the framework set by law. Report an injured cat to an association or a vet.

Frequently asked questions

Am I allowed to feed a street cat?

Law 19.25 regulates feeding stray animals in public spaces. The safest option is to go through an association or check with your local council.

Can a street cat become an indoor cat?

Yes, especially when young. A vet visit (vaccines, deworming, sterilisation) and a few weeks of adjustment are often enough.
