Protecting Your Dog From the Autumn Cold in Marrakech

In autumn in Marrakech, nights fall to around 10 °C in November and 6 °C in December, after still-mild days. Most healthy adult dogs cope fine, but puppies, senior dogs, small breeds and short-haired dogs need a dry shelter, shorter walks during the cool hours and a little extra attention.

What temperature is too cold for a dog in Marrakech?

There is no single threshold: it depends on size, age, coat and health. In practice, once nights drop below 10 °C — common in Marrakech from November on — fragile dogs start to feel cold, especially if they sleep outside or on concrete. The real trap is Marrakech's day/night swing (warm days above 20 °C, much cooler nights): the night-time cold is easy to underestimate.

How do I protect a dog from the cold at night?

Give it a raised bed, insulated from the ground, in a spot sheltered from wind and damp. For a dog that lives outdoors, a dry kennel with thick bedding (straw or a clean blanket) changes everything. Avoid long walks late at night and early morning, dry it well if it has rained, and for older or short-haired dogs a coat can help on cool outings.

Which dogs are most sensitive to the cold?

The most exposed are puppies, seniors, small breeds, short-haired dogs, and thin or sick animals. Watch for signs of discomfort: shivering, seeking warmth, refusing to go out, stiffness. If your dog is old or has arthritis, cold can worsen its pain: talk to your veterinarian.
