Fleas and ticks on dogs in autumn in Morocco

In autumn, fleas and ticks stay very active in Morocco: mild temperatures and still-warm nights extend their breeding cycle. Three habits are enough to avoid an infestation: treat your dog every month, check its coat after every outing, and regularly clean its environment.

Why are fleas and ticks so active in autumn?

Many owners drop their guard at the end of summer, yet autumn is often the year’s peak. It comes down to the flea life cycle: at any given moment, only a small share of the population is actually on the animal. The bulk — eggs, larvae and pupae — lives in the environment (rugs, bedding, cracks) and waits for the right conditions to hatch. Morocco’s mild autumn, then indoor heating, provide exactly those conditions.

What are the signs of an infestation in dogs?

  • Repeated scratching, licking or biting, especially at the base of the tail;
  • Tiny black specks in the coat (flea dirt) and reddened skin;
  • Localised hair loss and irritated patches;
  • Visible ticks, attached mainly to the ears, neck and between the toes.

How do you treat fleas and ticks effectively?

Antiparasitics come in several forms: spot-on pipettes, oral tablets and collars. To work, treatment must target both the animal and its environment: wash bedding at 60 °C, vacuum floors and corners thoroughly, and treat every pet in the home at the same time. To remove a tick, use a tick hook with a gentle twist — no ether or product. The right product depends on weight, age and health, so ask your vet before buying.

Keep in mind: never use a dog antiparasitic on a cat (some molecules, such as permethrin, are toxic to cats).

How do you stop parasites from coming back?

Consistency makes the difference: keep a monthly treatment schedule, check the coat after every walk, and refresh the home cleaning. In ALEEF, the Health Record lets you log each treatment and get a reminder before the next one is due — so you never miss a date.

Frequently asked questions

Do ticks transmit diseases in Morocco?

Yes, ticks can transmit diseases such as babesiosis or ehrlichiosis. At the first sign (tiredness, fever, dark urine) after a bite, see a vet: only a professional can diagnose.

Should treatment continue in winter?

In a mild climate with indoor heating, fleas can survive year-round. Many vets recommend continuous treatment; ask what fits your region.

Are “natural” remedies enough?

They don’t replace a proven antiparasitic, and some can be dangerous. Talk to your vet.
