Sloughi and Aidi: Morocco's 2 dog breeds the world envies

Morocco has its own dog breeds, recognised worldwide. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) has entrusted Morocco with the standard of two breeds: the Sloughi, an elegant sighthound, and the Aidi, the mountain dog of the Atlas. Many Moroccans see them without knowing their story.

The Sloughi, the noble sighthound of the Maghreb

The Sloughi has existed for centuries in North Africa. According to FCI standard no. 188, most Sloughis are found in Morocco today, and Morocco holds the standard. It belongs to group 10, the sighthounds, in a single short-haired variety. Males stand 66 to 72 cm at the withers. The FCI accepted the Sloughi definitively in 1934, and the American Kennel Club recognised it in 2016.

A sight-hunting dog, it has historically been regarded as noble by the tribes. At home it is calm, clean and very attached to its family, but reserved with strangers. It needs to run regularly in a safe space.

The Aidi, guardian of the Atlas

The Aidi (FCI standard no. 247), also called the Atlas Mountain Dog or Berber dog, has always protected mountain flocks and camps from predators and intruders. It stands 52 to 62 cm and weighs about 25 kg, with a thick coat that shields it from cold and sun alike. Its first standard, in 1963, called it the "Atlas sheepdog"; the mistake was corrected in 1969, because it never herded sheep but guarded them.

A unique hunting duo

In Morocco, the two breeds often worked together: the Aidi located game by scent, then the Sloughi chased it down at full speed. A partnership that tells of centuries of Moroccan rural life.

Before welcoming one

These are magnificent but demanding breeds. The Sloughi needs daily runs and a calm home. The Aidi, a guard dog at heart, needs space, firm and kind training and early socialisation: it is rarely suited to a small flat. Talk to reputable breeders or shelters, and consider the beldi dog too, often robust and suited to the climate.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sloughi a flat dog?

It can live indoors if it runs enough every day in a fenced area.

Is the Aidi dangerous?

No, but it is a very protective guardian. Well socialised, it is loyal to its family.

How can I tell a real Sloughi?

Ask the breeder for its origins and pedigree, and have it examined by a vet.
