Can my dog hike at altitude in the High Atlas?

Most healthy adult dogs can, provided you adapt the effort. Altitude thins the oxygen and the cold sets in quickly once the sun drops. Avoid exposed summits with an unconditioned dog, a puppy, a senior or a brachycephalic (flat-faced) dog. If you have any doubt about its fitness, a pre-season vet check is a good idea.

How do I get my dog physically ready?

Gradually increase the length and elevation of its walks in the preceding weeks, rather than attempting one big hike out of nowhere. A dog used to flat ground is not ready for a long climb. Work on recall and heel walking too: on a narrow trail and among herds, an obedient dog is a safe dog.

What are the autumn risks (cold, paw pads, water)?
